Find These Dangers in Your Garage Door Before It’s Too Late

How Spending More Gets You WAY More on YOUR Garage Door

What’s one of the most dangerous parts of your home? If you answered “my garage door,” you’re right. Why are these elements of your home, designed to protect it, so unsafe? Read on to learn more about the hidden dangers your garage door might pose to you, your children and your pets.

The Dangers of Garage Doors

Garage doors are perilous for a few reasons. Firstly, garage doors are under pressure on a regular basis, literally. They’re attached to a spring that’s pulled open at least twice a day. As a result, the spring can deteriorate. Let’s say the spring snaps while your car is in the garage. Your car will be stuck in there until a repairman can come in to fix it.

Springs aren’t the only component of a garage door that can wear out over time. Nuts and bolts can come loose, causing the door to come off the track (among other things). Again, the door could be stuck in place – either shut tight or wide open.

Furthermore, a garage door could be installed with a defective component. That means that it could cause injury when it doesn’t open or close properly.

Other dangers include fingers being caught between garage door panels and adults, children and pets being caught underneath garage doors and being severely injured or killed.

Safety Features on New Garage Doors and Openers

Your garage door doesn’t have to keep you awake at night. On new garage doors and openers (those manufactured after 1991), there are a number of safety features designed to protect your home and its inhabitants.

The manual release handle detaches the door from the opening mechanism in the event of an emergency. Just pull on it, and you won’t be trapped in the garage. Wondering what it looks like and where it is? It’s bright red and located on the brackets above the garage door.

A garage door’s automatic reverse system is fairly self‑explanatory. Sensors are built in to the garage door opener to detect if someone or something is in the garage door’s path. If there is something in the way, the garage door will stop going down and reverse its direction.

By the way, it’s important to test the automatic reverse system at least once a month. How do you do that? Put a roll of paper towels in the garage door’s path. If the garage door doesn’t go back up when it gets near the paper towels, you need to have the garage door repaired.

In addition to the automatic reverse system, garage doors and openers manufactured in the US after 1992 must be equipped with a supplementary automatic reverse system. The supplementary automatic reverse system, as the name implies, goes above and beyond the automatic reverse system. It will have either photoelectric eyes or door edge sensors.

You can find photoelectric eyes at the base of each side of the garage door. They emit and detect beams of light. When the beam breaks, the photoelectric eyes tell the garage door to stop going down and reverse. Door edge sensors are a strip of pressure sensitive material installed at the garage door’s base. If the door edge sensor detects pressure when the garage door is closing, it will send a signal to the opener for the garage door to go up, not down.

Optional Safety Features

You can also purchase other safety features for your garage door and opener, although they’re not mandatory. If you don’t have them, your home would still pass an inspection.

One such safety feature is the ability to open and close your garage door with your smartphone. A number of companies offer openers that you can control with a mobile device app. These apps also send alerts to your smartphone when your garage door opens.

Another feature is a garage door timer. Do you frequently forget to close your garage door after you leave your home? A timer will make your absentmindedness a thing of the past. You can program it to close within a minute of opening.
