Five Tips to Help You Maintain Your Garage Door
Look and Listen
Before you start doing anything to your garage door, it is a good idea to do a full inspection. Look over your garage door while it is closed and inspect all of the hardware. If anything seems loose such as the roller brackets or bolts, tighten them up. Inspect your garage door’s rollers for deterioration, you are mainly looking for cracks or chips. If you find that your rollers are aging, head to the hardware store to purchase replacement rollers.
Now let your garage door move up and down a few times. Do you hear squeaking? if you do it is time to get the lubricant out.
Clean and Lubricate Your Rollers
If your door is squeaking and creaking this could be due to the rollers. You will want to grab an old cloth or rag and clean off your rollers, removing dirt and debris. Once your rollers are sparkly clean you can then use a can of garage door spray lubricant. Adding oil lubricant, such as 10W30 will help keep those moving parts working correctly. You can do the same thing with any other moving parts on your door.
Replace Weather Sealant
The weather sealant that is attached to the bottom of your garage door is an important part of keeping the elements out. Check the sealant, if it has cracks or it is split or broken, you will need to go ahead and replace it.
Safety Check
Your automatic door has safety features, one of these is the auto reverse feature. It is important that this feature works correctly to help keep everyone safe. You can easily check if your auto reverse feature is working, by placing an object such as a piece of 2×4 on the ground right under the opener. Now test your door by letting it down, the door should stop and reverse within two seconds of realizing something is there.

Keep it Clean
Keeping your garage door clean is important to deter rust from setting in. You can almost treat the cleanliness of your garage in the same manner as you do with your car. Use dish soap or a gentle detergent added to some warm water, to wash down your door. Use a hose or power washer to wash off the soap and then allow the door to dry. Once the door is clean, add a layer of car wax to the door. This can prevent future dirt build up and protect your door from the elements.
By performing regular DIY garage door maintenance, you can be sure that your garage door is safe, and will remain in good condition for many years to come.
