Take the Hassle Out of Garage Organization with Walls of Storage Shelves

One of the best ways to organize your garage is to add some shelves to the wall. It’s the best way to organize your tools, sporting goods and toys. But it begs the questions should you build your own or just buy a prefabricated set?

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of these garage shelves.

Building Your Own Garage Shelving

Pros:

  1. Cost: It should be cheaper, as long as you do it correctly the first time.
  2. Strength: Assuming you pick a good design, odds are good your shelves would be more durable.
  3. Customization: Build to suit your space, instead of trying to make something fit.
  4. Self‑satisfaction: “I did that.” Intangible. Even if it’s as simple as garage shelves.
  5. Options: Google and YouTube are full of step‑by‑step guides for lots of different garage shelving ideas.

Cons:

  1. More Difficult & Time Consuming You’re doing all the work yourself, and need to have the materials and tools as well.

Buying Garage Shelving

Pros:

  1. Quick and Easy: If you’re in the market for either of those things, this is the way to go.
  2. Modular: You can parts and pieces to this later if you need more space.

Cons:

  1. Cost: These could more expensive, depending on what you want/ need.
  2. Strength: This may be a bit flimsier than what your can do on your own. But that depends on a lot of factors.
  3. Customization: You’re a bit limited here. You should measure your space ahead of time so you can buy exactly what you need.

Other Factors to Consider About Garage Shelving

Do you really have time to build your own?

Partially built shelves that sit around for a week or more will exacerbate your messy garage situation. If you’re going to do it, make sure you CAN do it in a day or weekend, at the most.

Bins are Cheap and Convenient

You may see prefabricated kits with bins and assume you need to buy them to get that. You really don’t. Bins are cheap at any hardware store, which can keep your costs down when building your own.

Measure Twice, Buy Once

Whether you’re buying your materials, or buying the whole unit, it’s important to know the exact dimensions of the space you’re working with. There is nothing worse than having to drive back to the store because of a fitting problem.

So the decision is very much yours. Decide how much time you have, versus how much money you want to spend‑much like any DIY project. But it’s very easy to find garage shelving ideas.
