What are my options when it comes to garage flooring?

Porcelain Garage Flooring

You know that your garage floor takes abuse every day, and that’s why, when you compare it to other floors in your home, it shows signs of wear quite a bit sooner. After all, in the rest of your house, you’re not dealing with tire marks, oil stains, and all the crud you bring in from not just your car, but bikes and other sporting equipment.

So, what kind of flooring should you choose for your garage? There are basically four things that you have to consider in order to get the right product:

  1. How durable the flooring needs to be
  2. How long you want it to last
  3. How you want it to look
  4. How much you’re willing to spend

Once you’ve taken these four factors into account, you can head out and shop for flooring. You’re still not done, though, because regardless of what you choose, it’s vital that you prepare the garage floor properly. If there are cracks or other defects, they’ll have to be corrected before you install the flooring.

Paint is easiest

Painting Garage Flooring

If you choose to paint your garage floor, you’ll be going with the option that actually requires the least preparation, and also the most affordable option. There are several latex‑based paints that can be used on concrete floors, and they’re very easy to apply. The problem with this approach, though, is that latex paint stains easily, so if you have a fluid spill, you’re going to have to clean it up right away. Usually, latex paint will last a few years, and it’s also easy to clean. You might also choose an acrylic paint for your garage floor. A paint specialist can advise you as to the best choice when it comes to paint for your garage floor.

Epoxy paint

By far, epoxy paint is the most popular choice for re‑finishing your garage floor using paint. You can have it done by a professional, but you can also do it yourself. Epoxy paint is very effective when it comes to repelling stains, even those caused by petroleum products. You can also customize the look of your garage floor by choosing flakes or chips that will add visual impact. Epoxy paint is very easy to clean – just use a good floor cleaner and a squeegee.

Floor tiles

Floor tiles are available in vinyl, rubber, or composite materials. This option is more expensive than painting, but it’s superior when it comes to durability, maintenance and appearance.

  • Snap together tiles

These are rubber tiles that are very flexible, so they’ll forgive a lot of flaws in the sub‑floor. They’re available in a variety of colors, and they’re very easy to clean – just vacuum periodically, and scrub when necessary. A similar option is rubber matting, which you can roll out over your garage floor instead of having to link tiles together.

  • Vinyl composition tiles

Next time you’re out grocery shopping, take a look at the floor. Grocery stores often use vinyl composition tiles. There usually 12×23 inches, and approximately 1/8 inch thick. They come in a variety of finishes, and they’re very stain‑resistant.

  • Porcelain tiles

Porcelain is thicker than ceramic, and the most durable choice for a garage floor. They’re installed the same way as you would ceramic tile, and they’re very durable and easy to clean.

Of course, in the final analysis, it all depends on what pleases you visually, and what meets your needs. You’re certain to be pleased with one of the options above, though, and any will add to the value of your garage. A professional can talk with you in greater detail about the types of garage flooring on offer, and can also help you to choose the type that best fits your budget.
